Joep van Liefland
Joep van Liefland (1966, Utrecht) is a Dutch conceptual artist based in Berlin, whose work centers on the transformation and impermanence of media in the context of technological progress. Van Liefland is best known for his large-scale installations, sculptures, wall objects, and collages made from obsolete media technologies such as videocassettes, monitors, and other analog devices.
Van Liefland’s art investigates universal themes of transition—from old to new, analog to digital—and the fleeting nature of technological artifacts. By repurposing discarded media, he acts as both archivist and artist, creating works that evoke both a sense of loss and the poetic potential of forgotten technologies. His approach is often described as forensic and fetishistic, blending elements of anthropology and personal memory to construct a “cosmology of technological evangelism for a time passed but a feeling still deeply felt”.
Alongside his artistic practice, Van Liefland co-founded the influential Berlin project space AUTOCENTER, which has played a significant role in the city’s contemporary art scene since 2001.
